Aaron Hawthorne

As an organist who takes a particular interest in “cinema” organs (that is to say, the organs which once lived in Picture Houses for intermission entertainment and silent film accompaniment), I have recently been doing more work with silent films (mainly films produced before 1930) with pipe organs (not exclusively ex. cinema organs), in the hope of raising awareness of organs and silent film: both of which seem to be underappreciated, misrepresented and even in danger of elimination from art culture. Thesilent film experience is unique and original. There are various trains of thoughts when it comes to devising scores for film accompaniment and I prefer to work as an improvisational artist; interpreting what I see on screen into live, raw music and sounds. From an audience perspective, the experience is neither cinematic or concert, one gets lost in a world between sound and vision.
