ALTERATRAD with Jemima Thewes, Tim Lane and Alex Maxwell at The Stove Network Dumfries

Join us for a night of Experimental, Alternative Folk. Rooted in the ballad genre, cloud hopping tales are told on a bed of playful instrumentation, making an enveloping folksy fusion of dark songs and deep, bright rhythms, evoking highland landscapes, the underworld, and transformation. The sound is expanding to include electronic effects and bigger drums with Jemima Thews and Tim Lane.

Jemima writes songs that are deeply textured with layers of grit, tenderness, mischief, wisdom, and a few twists. She collaborates with various musician pals to charm you along a cathartic, spell-binding and life-affirming journey.

Jemima always sang songs to herself, the hills, and the dogs in the rugged Scottish highland landscape from where she grew up. A lover of ballads, but too shy to share them with anyone, it wasn’t until 2013 when she was greatly impacted by an illness that took her to the edge of her life and back again that she truly found her voice and began writing songs in earnest.

‘Calling’ is the debut album by Jemima Thewes, written and recorded over several years in her home in East Lothian with partner, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Tim Lane (Hidden Orchestra) and is being released through the label Last Night From Glasgow in March 2022. The album features new work written by Jemima, plus a traditional ballad or two, making an enveloping folksy fusion of dark songs and deep, bright rhythms, evoking highland landscapes, the underworld and transformation. The album features a multitude of talented musicians on top of the core 4-piece band: Kate Young and Morag Brown on fiddles, Misha Somerville on low whistle, Jem Le Lievre on bass guitar, David Boyter on guitar and mandolin, Susan Appelbe on cello, Tim Lane on tongue drum, kit, and backing vocals, and Jemima on voice, ukulele, tenor guitar, bass guitar, shruti box, and jaws harp.

The album follows Jemima’s debut EP Bright Shadows also recorded with Tim Lane, was released independently in 2015 to much acclaim, with radio plays on Travelling Folk and Late Junction. As a duo, Jemima and Tim create a surprisingly full and rich sound, sometimes sparse, sometimes thick with danceable beats and effects, always compelling.

Support is by the Also equally talented Alex Maxwell, is an indie-folk-rock, Dumfries singer/songwriter.
2017 saw Alex championed as a BBC Introducing Artist and Scotsman/Scotland on Sunday ‘Artist to Watch. The first single The Want Comes in Waves had repeated airplay on BBC Radio 6 Music through BBC Introducing and BBC Radio Scotland. Alex was featured as a Fresh Fave on Tom Robinson’s ‘Fresh On The Net’. Showcase performances at the BBC stage, Edinburgh Fringe, and Dumfries Music Conference preceded this. The next single Soul Divine was recorded with the Tinderbox String Quartet and was Single of the Week on Janice Forsyth’s BBC Radio Scotland show. So Inaction the third single and the first as a full band was released on 15 September 2020.

VENUE

The Stove Network Dumfries

The Stove Network is an arts and community organisation in the heart of Dumfries High Street. We’re a cafe, a meeting place and an arts venue with a diverse programme stretching across music and literature, visual and public art, film and theatre, to town planning, architecture and design. We use arts and creativity to encourage, to gather, learn and bring life back to our town centre. We see the arts not as something solely for an ‘arts audience’ but rather as a vital contribution to society on all fronts. At the heart of everything we do is a love for our town and the wider region. As the only arts-led development trust in Scotland, we work alongside our local authority, community organizations, local businesses, and charities to create a vision for the future of Dumfries High Street. We’re aiming to create a place where culture, community and enterprise work hand-in-hand to support a new vision of the High Street. We work hard to raise the profile of our creative community and our town through regular opportunities, workshops, events, and projects. We’re also a hub for the creative community of Dumfries.
